
WAUKEE — Damp and cool conditions prevailed Tuesday as Woodward-Granger ran against much larger schools at the Waukee Invitational.
The Hawk girls were sixth in a nine-team field, with the Hawk boys seventh in an eight-squad boys competition.
Waukee had 32 points as a winning score in the girls varsity race, with Des Moines Roosevelt second at 45 and DC-G third at 68 while W-G finished sixth with 209 points.
Camille Jackson of Ames was the girls champion in 19 minutes, 12 seconds. Sydney Schaffer and Peyton Keideman, both of Waukee, were second and third overall in 19:21 and 19:29, respectively. There were 79 girls competing.
The five Hawks who scored finished within a span of eight placers. Josie Noland (24:30), Posey Robinson (24:38), Bella Milosevich (25:11), Ava Petersen (25:34) and Natalie Helbling (25:45) comprised the quintet, which claimed spots 39-40-41-43 and 46.
Sydney Grell (51st, 26:38) and Chloe David (52nd, 26:56) were 51-52, but did not have their places used for the team total. Makenzie Dresback (26:58) and Katie Grell (27:16) were also in action for W-G.
Waukee (19), Ames (65) and the Johnston JV (78) were 1-2-3 in the boys team race, with W-G recording 215 points.
Waukee’s Moe Smith (16:45) and Travis Loecke (16:50) placed 1-2 in the boys competition, with Johnston JV harrier Sam Schmitz (16:57) finishing third. A total of 67 boys ran in the race.
Trevor Faltonson led the W-G boys by crossing 38th in 19:10, with Alex Bice 41st in 19:36 and Dylan Steele 42nd in 19:43. Xavier Ibarra (45th, 20:37) and Noah Gleason (49th, 21:44) also scored, with the 51-52 spots claimed by Kurt Crouse (22:26) and Nick Buch (23:21) were not tabulated.
Dilynn Lewiston (24:50), Colt Palmer (24:50) and Nate Rosen (25:02) also competed for the Hawks.
W-G resumes competition Monday at Nodaway Valley and October 4 at Saydel.
