The blaring of Perry’s Civil Defense horns at 6:36 p.m. Monday sent the Perry School Board and numerous others in the Brady Library at PHS in search of shelter.
A Tornado Warning had been issued for Perry, and it was learned, minutes later, that a possible tornado might have touched down about two miles due north of the high school.
The board, local media members and numerous school officials and guests were forced to vacate the library for the safety of a conference room across a corridor. Some student activities, including the color guard flag squad, were practicing at the school and were also forced to seek shelter in approved areas.
The meeting resumed at 6:45 p.m. Heavy rain fell on the city until approximately 8 p.m. with showers expected to continue through the next few days.
The Perry Volunteer Fire Department was paged to send storm spotters west toward Osumundson Manufacturing and north to Berkely after cloud rotation was reported northof Dawson. No reports of injuries or major property damage were received in the first few hours after the passing of the strong storms.
