BOONE — The 2018 postseason was a short one for the Perry netters, as host Boone scored a 3-0 win over their Raccoon River Conference foes in a Class 4A Region 3 first round match Wednesday.
The Boone volleyballers (8-27) won for the third time this season over Perry (7-32) with the sweep. The Toreadors battle back from an early deficit to post a 25-22 win in the first set, then recorded a 25-12 win in set two to put a sweep in place.
Boone claimed a 25-10 win in a lopsided third, but not before adding an extra layer to the animosity already existing, across most sports, between the schools. Leading 2-0 and 24-10 in the final set, the Toreadors called a timeout for no apparent reason, completing the sweep on the next point.
Efficiency, in both attacks and serving, have hampered Perry all season and worked against the Jayettes Wednesday. Perry had 23 kills but 12 errors on 73 attacks for a success rate of just .143 while serving just 36-of-44 (82 percent) with no aces serves.
Kacy Nevitt’s 13 kills led the way for the guests, with Jasmine Shriver adding five kills. Mackenzie Ayers, Jayna Kenney, Gabby West, Quinn Whiton and Peyton Tunink had one kill apiece, with Whiton distributing 18 assists, Magley Orellana two and Kenney and Nevitt one each. West and Whiton each had assisted blocks at the net.
Kenney was 13-of-13 serving, with Shriver 7-of-9, Whiton 4-of-6, Orellana 4-of-4, Ayers and Nevitt both 3-of-5 while Ainsley Marburger was 2-of-2 behind the line.
Orellana had 12 digs and Nevitt and Shriver eight apiece. Stepanie Garcia and Whiton both talleid six digs, with Mary Ann Riesberg making five digs and Marburger and West two apiece. Ayers and Kenney also had digs for Perry.
Libero player Orellana set two new school records for Perry this season, as the junior tallied 317 total digs and averaged 3.66 digs per set, both new Jayette standards.
