The Dallas Center American Legion Auxiliary will host a fundraising luncheon and bake sale Saturday, Dec. 1 at the Dallas Center Memorial Hall from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to raise money for the Freedom Rock project in Minburn.
A free-will donation is encouraged for admission.
The event will offer a selection of delicious soups, sandwiches and beverages as well as gourmet cupcakes from Perry-based bakery Tammy Cakes. Baked goods donated by members of the Auxiliary will also be sold or auctioned to help raise the $18,000 needed to complete the landscaping and memorial at the Dallas County Freedom Rock site.
“This event will bring our community together to help complete the funding for this wonderful project in our county,” said Wilma York, chair of the Dallas Center American Legion Auxiliary. “The Dallas County Freedom Rock is a tribute to the sacrifices our local veterans have made to protect our freedoms and also an important new attraction we can all be proud of.”
The Dallas County Freedom Rock is in the town of Minburn, just off U.S. Highway 169 and south of the Minburn Depot, which is easily accessible from the Raccoon River Valley Bike Trail and within view of highway traffic.
The 25-ton, seven-foot-tall rock, donated by Dennis Allen of Herndon, is scheduled to be painted by Iowa artist Ray “Bubba” Sorensen in 2019. He painted the first Freedom Rock in 1999 in Greenfield and has been working since to complete a rock in each of Iowa’s 99 counties.
