The Des Moines office of the National Weather Service (NWS) has downgraded the central-Iowa forecast for Sunday from a winter storm watch to a winter weather advisory.
The winter weather advisory will remain in effect from midnight Saturday until midnight Sunday, with snow and blowing snow expected.
Snowfall of 4 to 8 inches is forecast over southern and southeastern Iowa, with lighter amounts — 1 to 4 inches — further north toward U.S. Highway 30.
The NWS said there remains uncertainty on the exact track and strength of the storm, so further adjustments in the forecast are possible.
Additionally, strong north winds of 20 to 40 mph will produce areas of blowing and drifting snow, resulting in poor visibility and near blizzard conditions at times. Travel is strongly
discouraged Saturday night through Sunday.
Snow is forecast in Dallas County as well as Boone, Story, Marshall, Tama, Audubon, Guthrie, Polk, Cass, Adair and Adams counties.
Affected cities include Perry as well as Boone, Ames, Marshalltown, Tama, Toledo, Traer, Dysart, Gladbrook, Audubon, Exira, Guthrie Center, Panora, Bayard, Casey, Waukee, Adel, Des Moines, Atlantic, Greenfield, Stuart, Adair, Fontanelle and Corning.
