The Perry cheerleaders encourage a Bluejay grappler earlier this season. The JV Jays provided plenty of reason for excitement after competing at DM North Saturday.

DES MOINES — Twenty junior varsity wrestlers from Perry participated in the Des Moines North/Hoover JV Invitational, with three placing first and seven others second in their respective brackets.

Each wrestler had three matches, with those 3-0 placing first and those 2-1 second. Third place went to the grapplers who finished 1-2 at the invite.

Tanner Burgin, Brady Caldwell and Tucker Strough were all blue-ribbon winners for the Bluejay JV, with Bryan Funez, Leonard Jacobson, Tomas Lopez, Rylee Ray, Bryan Rivas, Jonathan Silva and Ever Tobar finishing second. Jacobson and Lopez were second despite 1-2 records.

Ian Castellanos, Amos Barrios-Munoz and Charley Guardado earned third-place points for Perry, with Cristian Chavez, Zach Darr, Alex Fickbohm, Jose Flores, Alex Gomez, Carlos Gonzalez and Christian Simmons also in action but unable to record a victory.

The Perry JV — as a team — will compete Friday in the Saydel Invitational.
