Visiting Dallas Center-Grimes showed little inclination to wait around and see if Perry had addressed scoring issues that have plagued both the Jayettes and Bluejays, racing to large early leads in both games to claim two wins in non-conference basketball Tuesday.
The Fillies (4-1) won the girls game, 71-17, after outscoring the Jayettes (1-5) 23-2 in each of the first two quarters. The margin in the nightcap was smaller, but still substantial, as the Mustangs (2-1) turned a 38-15 halftime advantage into a 66-26 win over the Bluejays (0-4).
One basket from Jayna Kenney in each of the first two frames was all the Perry offense could muster against the DC-G girls, who scored repeatedly on easy open-court baskets as the hosts turned the ball over an unofficial 18 times in the opening half.
With a continuous clock in effect, Perry was forced to fire away from beyond the 3-point line, with disastrous results, the hosts making only 3-of-24 such attempts in the game. The Jayettes were a combined 7-of-36 from the floor in the game while grabbing only 14 rebounds.
Kenney had six points to lead the home team, with Molly Lutmer adding five points while Quinn Whiton and Peyton Tunink each had three points.
Junior Jordan Cunningham hit for 17 points to pace DC-G, with Elle Nelson adding nine points and Ella Lampe and Riley Hall eight points apiece. Lauren Osborn, Elizabeth Elfvin and Julia Reis had seven points apiece, with Lexi Protzman tallying six points and Kylie Merical two.
Eleven Mustangs entered the scoring column in DC-G’s 40-point win in the second game. DC-G held a 25-12 lead after one period, then outscored Perry, 13-3, in the second quarter to open a 38-15 gap at the break.
Keghan West had eight points to lead Perry, with Mohamed Abdelnabi adding five points. Alex Morales and Kato Dougan had four points apiece, with Mario Cruz recording three points and Carlos Calderon two.
Cody Hall had 11 and Gabe Winn-Peterman and Luke Rankin 10 each for the visitors, with Cole Glasgow scoring eight points and Tyler Borneman seven. Five points from both Logan SMith and Chase Stratton, from from Dawson Lego and two each from Caleb Rhoads, Alex Thomas and Rudy Stallman completed the scoring ledger.
Perry returns to Raccoon River Conference play with a visit to Carlisle Friday. They will visit Norwalk for non-conference play Tuesday, then host ADM Dec. 14 for a RRC set.
