
MADRID — Both ends of a WCAC set went to host Madrid over Woodward-Granger Tuesday, with the Tiger girls posting a 42-39 overtime victory, followed by the host boys claiming a 78-67 win.
W-G (2-7, 1-5) had the ball along the baseline with a three seconds left in regulation, with Katelyn Scharlau scoring off the pass to force overtime with the scored knotted at 33-all.
Madrid (3-5, 2-3) led, 42-39, with W-G again having in inbounds play along the baseline. The Hawks set screens and had an open look at a 3-pointer which would have forced a second overtime period, but the shot would not go down, leaving the hosts with the win.
The game was tight all the way, with Madrid leading, 16-14 at the half, and with the teams tied at 25-all entering the fourth quarter.
Freshmen Emma Anderson and Darby Nixon led W-G, with 22 and seven points, respectively. Scharlau had six points, and Kayley Dresback and Natalie Helbling two apiece.
The Hawks finished 10-of-18 at the free throw line, with the Tigers splashing 14-of-19.
Sarah Eagleton paced the home team with 19 points, with Shelbi Raymond adding 11. Six points apiece from Hannah Mertz and Gabby Brunner capped the Tiger scoring.
The boys contest was a battle between a pair of teams that entered the contest with identical 6-1 records.
W-G opened an 18-13 lead after one period of play, but it was the second quarter that would prove decisive in the long run, with a 21-9 edge giving Madrid a 34-27 lead at the intermission.
The hosts used a 22-13 advantage in the third frame to spread their advantage to 56-40, creating a comfortable margin entering the fourth quarter and helping guarantee the win.
The whistles heavily favored the hosts, with W-G called for 29 fouls and having three players fouling out, though some were deliberate infractions as the guests tried to catch up late in the contest.
As a result, Madrid attempted 45 free throws, sinking 31, while W-G was 11-of-15 at the charity stripe.
Braden Gibbons was 15-of-18 at the line while scoring 22 points for the hosts. Landon Klatt and Mason Lobeck had 14 points apiece, with Devin Fuson adding 11 points. Gabe Peterson contributed eight points, Eric Steig six and Logan Wicker three.
Lobeck had 11 rebounds and Fuson eight, with Klatt clearing nine boards and passing out five assists while Gibbons had six assists.
Bryce Achenbach had a game-high 23 points for W-G, with Keith Braunschweig tallying 18 points and Noah Hoyt eight. Alex Bice and Reese Jamison each scored six points, with Pacey Moats, Kaya Bowlsby and Nick Buch adding two points apiece.
Achenbach had seven rebounds, three assists and three steals, with Jamison pulling down seven caroms. Bowlsby and Hoyt had four assist apiece, with Bice providing three assists.
W-G caps their pre-holiday schedule Friday with a visit from Pleasantville.
