Panther boys win two of three to enter break 4-4

PANORA — An overtime thriller finished in favor of host Panorama Friday as the Panthers wrested a 67-65 from visiting Woodward Academy in WCAC action.

The win, following a 58-50 triumph at Mount Ayr Thursday and a 47-43 setback to Ogden Dec. 18, lifted Panorama to 4-4 overall and 3-4 in conference play entering the holiday break.

The Academy held a 29-25 lead at half Friday, with the Knights maintaining a four-point edge, at 42-38, as the fourth quarter began. A 20-16 mini-run tied the game at 58-all after regulation, with the Panthers prevailing by a bucket in the four-minute extra period.

A trio of Panthers were particularly offensive in the win, with Zach Rizzuti scoring 23 points, Kolby Shackelford 20 and Gracen Welberg 17. Lucas Leiferman added five points and Malachi Peasley two to the winning cause.

Rizzuti had seven rebounds and six steals, Welberg six boards and five thefts and Peasley three assists as the hosts overcame 4-of-19 shooting behind the 3-point line.

Statistics from the Academy (3-7, 2-6) remain unavailable.

Four Panorama players reached double-digit scoring at Mount Ayr Thursday. The Panthers turned a 20-18 halftime lead into a 38-30 advantage after three periods en route to the non-conference win.

Rizzuti had 14 points, Welberg and Shackelford 12 apiece and Peasely 10, with Leiferman scoring seven points and Dominic Walker three.

Welberg yanked down 11 caroms, with Peasely recording five assists while going Rizzuti in making three thefts apiece.

Isaac Grose had 13 points and 10 boards for the Raiders, with Dawson Frost scoring 12 points and John Shields 10 to help the hosts.

Ben Heeren scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Kayden Kruse 13 points as Ogden topped Panorama Dec. 18.

The Bulldogs saw their eight-point halftime lead trimmed to four, at 34-30, after three frames, but the Panthers could come no closer in suffering the loss.

Shackelford sank 4-of-6 3-pointers to score a team-high 15 points, with Welberg adding 14 points and seven rebounds. Peasely had six points, three assists and three steals, Leiferman five points and three assists, Rizzuti two assists and five boards and Preston Walker one point.
