GUTHRIE CENTER — The post-holiday portion of the girls basketball schedule for Woodward-Granger began on a positive note as the Hawks claimed wins over host AC/GC Friday and against visiting North Tama Thursday.
Friday’s 32-30 WCAC victory over the Chargers (6-5, 4-4) came after the Hawks (5-7, 3-5) prevailed in a wild final minute of action.
The game was tightly contested, with neither team ever able to lead by more than four points.
Staring guard Kayley Dresback fouled out for the Hawks with just over three minutes to play, with AC/GC holding a 28-24 lead with two minutes to play. Free throws from Mae Anderson surrounded an Emma Anderson basket as W-G moved in front, 29-28, with 40 seconds to play.
A Charger basket gave the hosts a 30-29 lead. Freshman Emma Anderson missed a jumper from the elbow, but followed her shot, grabbed the offensive rebound, and scored, moving W-G into a 31-30 lead.
Hawk post Katelyn Scharlau had a clean block of a potential game-winning shot, with Emma Anderson fouled after grabbing the loose ball. She hit the first free throw for a 32-30 margin with .9 seconds remaining, with a miss off the rim preventing any kind of shot from the hosts as time expired.
Emma Anderson had 13 points, Dresback seven points and Mae Anderson six points for W-G, with Scharlau adding four points and Natalie Helbling two.
Jadeyn Carrick led AC/GC with eight points, with Kylie Young and Kennedy Young scoring five points apiece. Savana Fuller had four points, with Chloe Largent, Genevieve Hooper, Jorja Hooper and Sierra O’Brien scoring two points apiece.
North Tama made the nearly 100-mile trip Thursday to repay a non-conference visit W-G made to Traer last season, a game the Hawks won, 39-21.
W-G held a 12-2 lead in Thursday’s game, with the margin growing to 24-8 at the intermission. North Tama trailed, 35-16, after three frames and was unable to close the gap in falling, 46-23.
The host Hawks tied (at the time) their win total from 2017-18 with their fourth victory while the Redhawks fell to 1-10 overall with the loss. W-G hit 13-of-24 free throws in the game, with North Tama connecting on 3-of-8.
Emma Anderson led the home team with 14 points, with Mae Anderson providing nine points, Darby Nixon eight and Dresback seven. Helbling and Scharlau had three points apiece, with Rian Jamison adding two points.
Katie Kopriva had nine points, Karly Jans six, Abby DeBoef four and Carlie Garder and Rylee McLean two apiece for the visitors.
W-G hosts Panorama Tuesday and visits Van Meter Friday in a pair of WCAC sets next week.
