Kelly Gene Broyles, 65, of Adel was arrested Sunday on charges two counts of attempted murder.

An Adel man was charged with attempted murder in Adel Sunday after he allegedly tried to run over an Iowa City woman with his pickup truck and then rammed a trailer housing an Adel woman.

Kelly Gene Broyles, 65, of 319 N. Seventh St., Adel, was charged with two counts of attempted murder.

The incident began about 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of Seventh Street in Adel, where officers of the Adel Police Department and Dallas County Deputy Sheriffs responded to a report of a domestic disturbance.

The arriving officers found Broyles “operating a black 1995 Chevrolet pickup” that “was stuck in the yard due to three of the four tires being flat,” according to court records.

The officers made contact with the victims and a witness, who told the officers that Broyles “was angry that he couldn’t get to his garden from the back gate, which was blocked
by a camper that was parked in the backyard, and that he had people he didn’t want living at his house, living at his house,” according to court records.

The victims and a witness told the officers that Broyles allegedly “backed the truck into the backyard” in order “to ram the camper,” and one of the victims “got behind the truck to stop him from hitting the camper,” and Broyles “then hit the accelerator and hit her, causing her to almost fall down and get ran over,” according to court records.

Broyles allegedly “then intentionally struck the camper with his truck” and also “ran over a metal patio furniture set, which popped his tires,” according to court records.

Broyles allegedly told a Dallas County Deputy Sheriff that “he knew” one of the victims “was behind him while backing up and that” the other victim “was in the camper when he struck it,” according to court records.

One of the victims recorded the incident on her cell phone.

Broyles is held in the Dallas County Jail on a $50,000 cash or surety bond. He is scheduled  for a preliminary hearing June 22 in Dallas County District Court.
