The new Dallas County Jail hosted its most aged inmate last weekend when an Adel octogenarian spent Friday night in the hoosegow after her neighbor accused the elderly person of strangling her.
Gladys Virginia Harvey, 87, of 600 S. 12th St., Adel, was charged with assault.
The incident began about 4:30 p.m. Friday in the 600 block of S. 12th Street, where officers of the Adel Police Department responded to a report of “two females that were fighting,” according to court records.
The responding officers made contact with the 58-year-old female victim, Sharon Kilgore of 600 S. 12th St., Adel, who told the officers that she was helping another woman, Karla Jo Findley of 600 S. 12th St., Adel, to “fold her laundry” in the community room when Harvey entered the room and “started screaming at” Kilgore and telling her to shut up, according to court records.
Kilgore told the officers that Harvey allegedly “put her fist up in the air and told her let’s go” and then “walked up to her and put both hands around her neck and choked her,” according to court records.
Kilgore told the officers that Harvey “let go,” and Kilgore “walked away,” but Harvey allegedly “went after her again and put both hands around her neck again and choked her,” according to court records.
The officers observed “a red mark around Sharon’s neck that is consistent with Sharon’s and Karla’s story,” according to court records.
Harvey left the community room prior to the arrival of law enforcement.
Harvey, who has no prior criminal record, was held in the Dallas County Jail before her release on her own recognizance Saturday by Dallas County Magistrate Jonathan M. Kimple. She is scheduled for a pretrial conference Oct. 4 in Dallas County District Court.
