Big inning enough to carry Gilbert over W-G

WOODWARD — A six-run third inning did all the damage visiting Gilbert needed Tuesday to claim a 7-2 win over Woodward-Granger in non-conference softball.

W-G (5-22) had scored in the first inning when Brylee Bice doubled home Audrey Simmons, who had walked.

Gilbert (10-11) responded two frames later, sending six runners across the plate. Three of those runs, as well as a final Tiger tally in the sixth, were unearned as the Hawks were guilty of five errors in the loss.

The hosts scored a final run when Allie Moore opened the seventh by reaching on an error. She moved up on a ground out and eventually sped home after a pair of passed balls.

Rian Jamison allowed 10 hits in seven innings, allowing seven runs, three of them earned. She issued four walks and recorded one strikeout in taking the loss.

Bice added a single to her RBI-double, with Natalie Weaver hitting a single. Simmons and Chloe Houge each drew walks.

Brianna Newton struck out 11 and walked two in a complete game win. She allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits.

Halli Nissen had two singles and a double for the Tigers, with Peyton Mary Clatt driving in two runs with a pair of base hits.

W-G hosts Earlham tonight for a pair of varsity games. The Hawks will play two games Friday and two Saturday at the University of Iowa in the Clear Creek-Amana Tourney.

W-G faces Class 4A No. 2 Carlisle (20-2) at 4:30 p.m. and host CC-A (8-11) at 8 p.m. Friday before squaring off with 3A No. 11 Camanche (22-2) at 9:45 a.m. and Williamsburg (19-8) at 1 p.m. Saturday.
