WEBSTER CITY — The 2017 boys golf season ended for all but one Perry player Friday, as senior Noah Wilkening fired a 37-39–76 to advance to the district tourney Thursday.
Playing at Briggs Woods Golf Course near Webster City, Perry finished fifth in the eight team field. The top two teams advance, with the top three moving on if a top-two spot is claimed by the host team, as was the case Friday.
Webster City shot an impressive 291 to win the meet, creating an advancement spot for the next two teams, with Gilbert (316) and Nevada (319) ceasing the opportunity.
Boone (332) was fourth, with Perry (362), Iowa Falls-Alden (363), Ballard (365) and North Polk (383) completing the field.
Wilkening will travel to the Spencer Golf and Country Club Thursday and seek to earn a spot in the Class 3A State Tournament May 26-27 at Livermore.
Perry senior Dane McCarty fired a 42-49–91 in his last round as a Bluejay. He was joined in scoring by Tanner Duffy (40-55–95) and Luke Rathje (52-48–100). Connor Nielsen (50-55–105) and Gabe Ridnour (56-61–117) were also in action for Perry.
The champion Lynx were led by medalist Connor Shannon and runner-up Drew Fielder, both of whom carded rounds of 35-36–71. Nathan Ferrell (36-38–74) and Bryan Ferrell (38-36–74) also scored for the hosts.
With the home team posting the two lowest rounds, two individuals from teams that did not advance earned the right to move on, with Wilkening and Boone’s Tanner Schminke (38-39–77) doing just that.
Gilbert was led by Tommy Doyle’s 37-35–72 and Nevada by Dylan Sporrer’s 39-39–78. Ben Steinfeldt paced IF-A with a 45-45–90 and Noah Hartman Ballard with his 40-43–83 while Nathan Parker was low man for North Polk at 44-45–89.
