Perry scored their first five goals of Thursday’s Raccoon River Conference match with Boone during the 40-minute first half. The hosts needed only 12-1/2 minutes of the second half to push the scoreboard at Dewey Field to 10-0 to end the boys soccer match by the mercy rule.
“It is hard to gauge how well we did, as we were in possession the entire game and had very little defensive pressure applied to us,” Perry head coach Gary Overla said. “We did do a much better job in the second half of timing our runs and getting on the end of ‘through’ balls that ended in goals. I thought we finished well, also, and defensively, we did not face any pressure and we were very organized.”
Overla played every eligible player on the Perry bench in the lopsided win. Sophomore Tomas Lopez sparkled with a four-goal effort, with Mario Saldana adding two goals. Bryan Catalan, German Alvarenga and Mikey Velasco also scored, with a goal from Mario Cruz ending the game early.
Jehovany Rivera provided two assists in the win, with Brandon Ruiz, Amos Munoz and Luis Guzman also recording assists.
The Bluejay junior varsity was also a 10-0 winner Thursday, but the host did not keep statistics.
Overla noted that during the JV game “we had a good deal of freshman playign and we saw some really good things. The freshmen have a bright future ahead if they keep at it and get in the weight room.”
Perry hosts Indianola Monday and sixth-ranked Winterset Tuesday before visiting 6-1 Greene County April 27.
Winterset is 4-0 and has outscored their foes 28-0. The Huskies lost their top four scorers from a 16-2 team last year. Their losses were a 2-1 setback in the first game of the year to Perry and then, 1-0, to Perry in overtime in the state quarterfinals, no doubt leaving the team eager for revenge.
