Sunday’s bone-chilling temperatures could not cool the hot jazz sounds of Bob Fields and Swing Time, the latest offering in the Perry Fine Arts concert series.
The six-person Swing Time band, fronted by vocalist Bob Fields, entertained about 70 people in the Perry Performing Arts Center with a program of standards by Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Michael Buble, Dean Martin and others.
Fields offered congenial commentary in between songs and often joked with the receptive audience.
Fields qippped, “When I was a kid, I said to my mom, ‘Mom, when I grown up, I want to be a musician.’ ‘You can’t do both,’ she said.” He said music has been a great source of joy in his life.
Fields has been performing for 50 years and is a member of the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He and the Swing Time band teamed up five years ago. They have performed at the Copa Cabana, Havana Garage, the VFW, American Legion, the New York State of Mind in Omaha, the Lewis and Clark Auditorium in South Dakota and many other venues in Nebraska, South Dakota and Iowa.
Swing Time members include Jazz Educators Hall of Fame member Steve Lawson, Gary Wright, Harold Jansen, Jim Schweigert, Darrell Menning and Steve Charleston.
It was certainly an enjoyable afternoon of good music!
