A Boone man was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment Friday after he was convicted of vehicular homicide in connection with a December 2023 motor vehicle crash on Iowa Highway 141 near Dawson.

Gary Bugger, 65, of 1204 Tama St., Boone, was also convicted of second-offense possession of a controlled substance in Dallas County District Court.

According to court records, Bugger was traveling westbound on Iowa Highway 141 near Dawson on the afternoon of Dec. 8, 2023, when the 2017 Dodge Ram pickup he was driving collided with a vehicle, driven by Daniel Royce Beattie, 56, of Audubon, who was traveling eastbound on a 2010 BMW motorcycle.

Bugger “admitted to smoking methamphetamines earlier in the day,” and  meth was allegedly found in his bloodstream and “in his backpack, which was in the cab of the pickup,” according to court records.
