Bulldogs top Hawks with third quarter spurt

VAN METER — A seven-point halftime lead swelled to 15 points after a further eight minutes of play, enabling Van Meter to claim a 53-39 win over Woodward-Granger in WCAC girls action Friday.

Van Meter (3-2, 2-1) held a 14-10 advantage after the first period and entered the break holding a 26-19 lead. The Bulldogs decided the eventual outcome with a 15-7 run in the third frame to open a 41-26 lead en route to the win.

Neither team shot well, Van Meter sinking just 16-of-44, including 9-of-26 on 3-pointers. The hosts were 12-of-19 at the free throw line. W-G was 15-of-40 from the field (3-of-7 beyond the arc) but were a woeful 6-of-23 at the stripe.

Alyssa Bice had 15 points for W-G, with Katelyn Scharlau adding 12. Six points from Mae Anderson and three apiece from Kayley Dresback and Kaitlyn Peters closed the Hawk scoring.

Scharlau had 11 rebounds and Peters five in the loss, with Dresback providing four assists while Natalie Helbling made four steals.

Kelsey Roberts led Van Meter with 17 points, with Clair Lauterbach tallying 16 points and Emily Roberts 12. Emily Roberts had seven rebounds and seven assists.

W-G host Ogden Tuesday before visiting Madrid Friday.
