Coaches vs Cancer night to be held at Perry basketball games Friday

The Relay for Life committee will be part of the celebration of "Coaches vs Cancer" night Friday when the Perry basketball teams host Ballard.

The Perry basketball teams will host Raccoon River Conference rivals Ballard Friday, with the twin bill recently designated as “Coaches vs. Cancer” night.

Coaches vs. Cancer is a nationwide collaboration between the National Association of Basketball Cocahes and the American Cancer Society which empowers coaches, their reams and local communities to make a difference in the ongoing fight against cancer.

Numerous themed activities will be held Friday, including a “Whiteout to Block-Out Cancer” effort in which all fans from both schools are encouraged to wear white to the game, signifying a united support of the effort. A $1 “Wall of Remembrance” for those affected directly by cancer will be offered and coaches will wear sneakers in support of the “Suits and Sneakers” cancer awareness cause.

Clark Wicks will speak between games and a “48-second drill” will be held, with cheerleaders going through the crowd with buckets, collecting donations for the fight against cancer.

An American Cancer Society Information Booth will be on hand, and public service announcements will be made during breaks in the contests. All fans will be asked to remain silent during the first minute of both the girls and boys games as an testament to the efforts to “Silence Cancer.”

Perry High School will have a “Jeans Day” for staff, with money donated to Relay for Life, and special event t-shirts will be for sale, with money donated to Relay for Life.

In addition, the Perry Relay for Life committee will sponsor a baked potato bar, with a cookie and lemonade for a $5 donation. A silent auction will also be held by the group.

The girls game will being at 6 p.m. with the boys contest following.
