A controlled burn in the 13200 block of N Avenue was visible for miles around Monday night about 9 p.m.
The farm ground on the east side of U.S. Highway 169 just north of the Four Corners intersection of Iowa Highway 141 was being systematically ignited by a person riding an ATV and using a drip torch.
Farmers burn their fields to remove plants that are already growing and to help the plants that are about to come up, according to soil scientists. These prescribed burns are used to improve the health of the field.
