October has been a busy month for officers of the Perry Police Department with 23 reported instances of breaking and entering occurring within the first 23 days of the month.
“We’ve had numerous break ins of garages over the past few weeks,” Perry Police Department Chief Eric Vaughn said Monday. “I would assume that we have one or two different people who have developed a pattern of burglarizing these garages.”
Vaughn said most of the breaking and enterings have occurred in garages detached from residences.

“Some of them are locked. Some of them are unlocked,” Vaughn said. “We encourage everyone to secure their vehicles and secure their garages as best they can. Deadbolts and that type of thing are the best solution especially for a garage that’s not attached to your residence.”
Vaughn said his department is “continuing to follow up on several leads that we have to identify the person or people that are responsible. That’s the best thing. Keep an eye on things. If you’ve got motion lights or any type of lighting, that helps deter this kind of action.
A similar rash of thefts in the Dallas Center and Ortonville areas has the Dallas County Sheriff’s office
“Give us some time,” said Dallas County Sheriff Chad Leonard. “We’re going to have some arrests on this. We’ve got a lot of information. It’s not like a local kid just went through three cars. It’s a lot bigger than that.”
Leonard also reminded residents to secure their property.
“People need to go back to locking their vehicles up. The three cars in Dallas Center were all unlocked,” he said. “Lock your stuff up. It’s unfortunate that we have to that, but we owe it to ourselves to protect our property somewhat. You can’t put it all off on law enforcement. There’s not enough eyeballs for all of that.”
