The DMACC Perry VanKirk Career Academy will soon begin hosting a three-day-a-week resource center for workforce-related assistance, the college announced Friday.

The move comes in response to the recent workforce changes affecting workers at the Tyson Fresh Meats plant in Perry, which announced in March its plan to close.

“This center aims to provide essential support and guidance to those impacted, offering access to training information, funding resources and other valuable workforce-related assistance,” a DMACC statement said.

The workforce resource center is part of the PerryNext efforts to address the immediate concerns arising from the plant closure. It will be open every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 1-7 p.m. throughout the summer, with both walk-in assistance and scheduled information sessions.

The resource center will offer a variety of resources and support from organizations in the workforce-development sector, including the Workforce Training Academy, Iowa Workforce Development, Proteus and others, the college said. Information sessions will cover topics ranging from training opportunities to navigating funding options, all aiming to empower workers to make informed decisions about their career paths.

Initial information sessions will be:

  • JumpStart CDL information sessions on Monday, May 13 from 4-7 p.m.
  • Funding resources for welding and CNA trainings on Tuesday, May 14 from 4-7 p.m., presented by Proteus and the Workforce Training Academy
  • Workforce Training Academy (welding and CNA) from noon-3 p.m. on Thursday, May 16.
