
WOODWARD — Visiting Des Moines Christian finished with a combined 54-27 doubling of the offensive output of Woodward-Granger en route to a 90-57 win Friday in their West Central Conference meeting.
The Lions (10-2, 9-2 after a Saturday loss) were tied with the Hawks (5-7, 3-7) at 12-all after the first quarter of play, but a 25-9 surge opened a 37-21 gulf at the half. DMC came out of the locker room determined to end whatever doubts remained, with a 29-18 spurt creating a 66-39 score with one frame remaining and cruised to the win from there. The Lions completed a season sweep with the win, as they were 82-40 winners Dec. 2 in Urbandale.
DMC sank 33-of-66 shots from the floor and 20-of-29 from the foul line while W-G attempted only 48 field goals, sinking 19. The Hawks finished a combined 17-of-25 at the stripe.
Marcus McConahay’s 12 points led the hosts, with Bodie Harrison adding nine points. Bryce Achenbach and Brady Aunspach tallied eight points apiece, with J. P. Nixon and Reese Jamison each scoring seven points while Nick Brummond, Cameron Hoyt and Brendan Bird each added two points.
McConahay led the Hawks under the rim with nine rebounds, with Achenbach having seven assists, three steals and two blocks while Harrison made off with three steals.
Ben Juhl had 24 points and four assists to lead DMC, with Isaac Prewitt adding 23 points and three steals and Nathan Herbers 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
W-G hosts the Woodward Academy tonight before joining the Hawk girls for a WCC set at Van Meter Friday.
