Claiming to be defending her mother, an Earlham woman was arrested last week after she allegedly injured a police officer in Adel.

Nancy Jane Cassady, 61, of 340 N.W. Third St., Earlham, was charged with assault on persons in certain occupations, assault on persons in certain occupations-bodily injury, interference with official acts-bodily injury and disorderly conduct.

The incident began about 8 p.m. on June 9 at a residence in the 29400 block of Old Portland Road in Adel, where officers of the Adel Police Department responded to a report of a domestic disturbance.

While the officers were investigating the report, Cassady arrived and said that “she was going to assault somebody that had hit her mother,” according to court records.

When the officers prevented Cassady’s entry into the residence, Cassady allegedly “became resistive by attempting to pull away” from the officers and “kicking at” them and “using her fingernails in an attempt to” enter the residence, according to court records.

At length Cassady was “assisted to the ground” by the officers, where she allegedly continued “resisting and attempting to kick law enforcement,” according to court records.

One of the officers “obtained 2-3 small open wounds” from Cassady’s fingernails, according to court records.

Cassady was held in the Dallas County Jail prior to her release on her own recognizance. Her arraignment is pending in Dallas County District Court.
