Competition was hot in the First Baptist Church chili cook-off Saturday night and with 15 kinds of chili to choose from — plus potato soup, macaroni and cheese and cinnamon rolls for dessert — no one came away hungry.
Guest judges Nick Bailey and Jim Caufield scientifically sampled the wide variety of chili, rating each concoction on its color, odor, texture, taste and temperature. The hominy chili was a change of pace.
Winner for the hottest chili was Andrew Beach of Ames. Overall winners were:
First Place: Megan Beach of Ames
Second Place: Brandon Soll of Perry
Third Place: The Winey family of Perry, represented by Eathan Winey
The Rev. Andrés Reyes said the blessing prior to the judgment, and he thanked Linda Hepworth for organizing the tasty event. After the contest, the gathering treated all the chilis as winner and helped themselves to the hot stuff.
