Longtime Perry Community School District elementary school teacher Florence Heck will be celebrated on the occasion of her 90th birthday with a surprise open house and card shower Saturday, Sept. 28 from 1-3 p.m. at the Perry Elks lodge.

Florence began her teaching career in a one-room schoolhouse and rounded it out when she and Nancy Geiken were the last kindergarten instructors whose classes occupied the stage in the gymnasium of the old Perry High School, later used as the Perry Junior High School, at Willis Avenue and 10th Street.

After retirement, Florence was elected the first president of the Dallas County Area Retired School Personnel Association.

Florence’s children — Erv, Liz, Ed, Steve, Janet and Tom — have arranged Saturday’s surprise party, and all of Florence’s friends in the community are invited to attend and wish her well.

“As of today, she still does not know about it,” daughter Janet said Friday, “so it will be a true surprise for her.”
