Football playoff pods set for all teams

State titles in seven classes of high school football will be earned Wednesday and Thursday.

BOONE — The IHSAA has established pods of three and of four teams for the first round of the playoffs in each class. Postseason play begins Friday, with second round matchups being played Oct. 23.

Only teams that reach the third round, played Oct. 30, will receive official recognition as a playoff team. Those teams will be the Sweet 16 in each class.

Perry (0-7) will travel to Nevada (5-2) to face the Cubs. Nevada surged late for a 34-23 win at Perry last season, the last time the two teams have met on the gridiron. The other Pod 14 game pits Boone (0-7) facing Ballard (6-1). The two winners will meet on Oct. 23.

Other 3A pairings of local interest include Pod 12, where DC-G (7-0) has received a bye and awaits the winner of Oskaloosa (2-5) and Carlisle (4-3). Pella (5-2) has a bye in Pod 13, with the Dutch to face the winner of the Winterset (5-2) vs. North Polk (1-6) game. Pod 15 has ADM (3-4) battling Bondurant-Farrar (4-3), with Harlan (7-0) having a bye and facing the victory. Class 3A Pod 16 had Glenwood (5-2) facing Norwalk (1-5) and Creston/Orient-Macksburg (1-6) dueling Lewis Central (5-1).

In Class 1A Woodward-Granger (5-2) will host Colfax-Mingo (0-7) in Pod 15 play, with Underwood (6-1) vs. West Central Valley (1-6) the other contest.

Pod 12 in 1A will feature Panorama (5-2) hosting East Marshall (2-5), with Pella Christian (4-3) entertaining Hudson (2-4).

Also in 1A will be AC/GC (3-4) facing Pleasantville (5-2), with the winner drawing Van Meter (7-0), who earned a bye. Pod 2 has Pocahontas Area (5-2) hosting Kuemper Catholic (1-6), with Emmetsburg (5-1) vs. Eagle Grove (0-5) the other game in the pod.

Class 2A Pod 16 is where Greene County (5-2) has been placed, with the Rams to host Red Oak (0-7), while Clarinda (3-4) squares off with Shenandoah (3-4).

Ogden (3-2) will welcome BCLUW (1-6) in Class A Pod 4, with the winner drawing 7-0 Grundy Center, who has a bye. Pod 3 has Madrid (2-3) traveling to Fort Dodge St. Edmond (5-2), with West Hancock (6-1) meeting NW Webster (0-6) in the other matchup.

All games will begin at 7 p.m. Admission to first and second round games is $6.
