To say that I am humbled would be --- unusual even for so melodramatic a person as me --- a bit of an understatement.

WEST DES MOINES — To say that I am humbled would be — unusual even for so melodramatic a person as me — a bit of an understatement.

In the early morning hours of Tuesday, I took myself to the emergency room at the Dallas County Hospital after experiencing several hours of shortness of breath.

To make a long story short, I have been a patient at Mercy Medical Center-West Lakes since Tuesday and with luck will be discharged Friday.

The problem? Atrial fibrillation, or an irregular rhythm and accelerated heart rate. Turns out those last 300 large pizzas were not such a good idea after all.

The medical team here has been wonderful as they work to put everything back in order. There is a long list of negatives regarding the condition but, thankfully, we keep checking those off.

Once things are under control, the proper medications will allow me to return to a normal routine, albeit one with conscientious health concerns in mind.

I look forward to hopping back into covering sports — it is what I do.

News of my situation has spread far and wide, and I want to extend my most sincere gratitude to all who have expressed their concerns and offered well wishes and prayers. All have been deeply appreciated.

The list of those I owe a more personal thanks to is long, but even the smallest kindness has had a positive effect. Thank you all!

With continued good fortune, I will swiftly be “back at it” and look forward to extending my thanks to each as I see you along the way.

With Great Gratitude,
Jeff Webster
