GRANGER, Iowa — A Granger man is recovering Thursday night after shooting himself in the early afternoon.
The incident began about 12:30 p.m., when a third-party caller said a man had an accident, according to public safety radio traffic. The caller also reported hearing the sound of a firearm discharged.
A short time later, Dallas County Deputy Sheriffs and the Granger Police Department located Leland Belew, 59, in a vehicle near his home at 1802 Locust St. in Granger.
Belew sustained a gunshot wound to his chest.
Weather conditions prevented a response by air ambulance, and Belew was transported by Granger EMS to Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
A statement issued Thursday afternoon by the Dallas County Sheriff’s office said that Belew is expected to survive, and the sheriff’s office is investigating whether “the shooting was accidental or intentional.”
At this time there is no danger to the public, the statement said.
