Greene County girls best W-G in overtime

JEFFERSON — Woodward-Granger rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime Thursday, but host Greene County used an 8-1 edge in the bonus four minutes to claim a 41-34 non-conference victory.

Greene County (4-7) was aided by a decided advantage at the free throw line, where the hosts attempted 35 shots, converting on 22. W-G (2-9) tried 22 free throws, but scored on only nine of their attempts.

The hosts held a 9-6 lead after one frame, with the low-scoring affair entering the half with the Rams hanging on to a 19-15 lead. Greene County led, 27-23, as the fourth quarter began, but W-G rallied late to force overtime with the team knotted at 33-all.

Senior Laurin Lyons led all scorers with 16 points for the hosts. She sank one 3-pointer and finished 13-of-19 at the charity stripe. Teammate Sam Hardaway contributed 13 points toward the winning effort.

Alyssa Bice had nine points, Natalie Helbling seven and Kayley Dresback six for the Hawks. Five points from Katelyn Scharlau, four from Mae Anderson, two from Lisa Pitman and one from Kaitlyn Peters completed the W-G scoring list.

W-G hosts AC/GC tonight, West Central Valley Tuesday and Des Moines Christian Jan. 12.
