A happy harvester, right, receives a free lunch from Perry-Hy-Vee’s Philip Kanealy Friday.

A few Perry-area farmers, working long hours now in harvesting this year’s crop, were the subjects of random acts of kindness this weekend.

Larry Vodenik, event coordinator at the Perry Hy-Vee, and Philip Kanealy, the store’s frozen food manager, gave away boxed lunches to several local crop growers and their hired hands, laborers recently described as “the heart and backbone of the great state that is Iowa.

Vodenik said the lucky lunchers were chosen randomly.

“Phillip and I drove around and passed out free meals to farmers who we found out working on their harvest,” Vodenik said. “We made three different stops, by Perry, Minburn and Woodward. I didn’t get the farmers’ names, just thanked them for everything they do and moved on down the road.”

Vodenik said the surprise visits would continue this week.
