Hawk girls fall in tourney after WCAC losses

ALLEMAN — Woodward-Granger played three games in two towns Friday after dropping two WCAC games to host Interstate-35 Thursday.

W-G opened play in Huxley Friday in the joint Ballard/North Polk Classic. Clarke was an 11-9 winner in the first game for W-G, with Grundy Center a 3-1 victor. The Hawks then traveled to North Polk, where they fell, 12-1 to Gilbert. The setbacks followed losses of 16-0, and of 12-3, at I-35 Thursday.

Eighth grader NataLeigh Herron pitched for W-G against Clarke, allowing 11 runs on 13 hits and two walks while striking out two. Herron tried to help herself at the plate, swatting two doubles and driving in a run.

Fellow grade eight Hawk Lauren Rodgers had a double, two singles and two RBIs, with Audrey Simmons also having a double and two singles. Georgia Simmons had a double, a single and two RBIs, with Chloe Houge hitting a double and Ava Petersen a single.

Rian Jamison started on the rubber and threw 4-1/3 innings, yielding a run on two walks and three strikeouts. Herron tossed 2-2/3 frames, allowing two runs on a walk and three hits while fanning one.

Rodgers had a double and scored, with Audrey Simmons adding a base hit.

Gilbert’s 12-1 win came in four innings and off of Jamison. She allowed 14 hits while walking one and striking out two.

Brylee Bice and Herron each hit double, with Houge and Rodgers contributing hits while freshman Taylor North scored.

Jamison was assessed the loss in Thursday’s opener at Truro, with Herron given the setback in the nightcap.

Bice had a double, with Houge and Georgia Simmons both having singles in the first game.

Audrey Simmons and Herron had two singles apiece in the second outing, with Rodgers providing a single as well.
