Hawk netters win one of five at tournament

BONDURANT — The Woodward-Granger volleyball team saw a chance to escape the annual Skip Anderson tourney at Bondurant Saturday with a 3-3 mark go askew, leaving the Hawks 1-5 in their six matches.

W-G (2-5) opened with losses of 21-20 and 21-13 to Des Moines Roosevelt and of 21-20 and 21-17 to Holy Trinity. The Hawks bounced back to topple Ames, 21-11, 18-21, 15-11 to finish 1-2 in initial pool play.

A loss of 21-7 and 21-18 to Pella Christian followed, with W-G dropping 2-1 matches to Williamsburg and North Polk despite winning the first set in both matches. The Hawks were 21-13 winners over the Raider to start their battle, but then fell, 23-21 and 15-10 to drop the match. They were 21-19 winners over the Comets to start their contest, but dropped the match with setbacks of 21-7 and 15-12.

The Hawks served 181-of-203 (88 percent) in the tourney, finishing with 25 aces. Faith Keuhl led the way, sporting a 33-35-9 clip behind the line, with Audrey Simmons 38-42-4.

Darby Nixon was 25-26-2, Elly Polich 33-36-3, Brayten Ashman 27-34-3 and Natalie Weaver 25-30-4. Emily Trewet also saw serving time, converting 1-of-4.

Nixon, the libero player, led the team with 37 combined digs. Polich had 35 digs, Weaver 34 and Keuhl 24, with Simmons recording 15, Gena Tague three and Grace Deputy, Samantha Volz and Emily Trewet one each.

Weaver had 5.5 blocks, Ashman 2.5, Polich and Deputy 1.5 each, and Tague one.

Polich tallied 34 kills and Weaver 21 to pace the Hawks. Tague and Simmons had six kills apiece, Ashman four and Deputy two.

Simmons distributed 33 assists, Polich 21 and Nixon 16. Weaver added nine assists, Keuly three, Tague two and Ashman one.

W-G will host Des Moines Christian Tuesday before making their annual trip to the ADM tourney Thursday.
