Hawk volleyball splits four matches Saturday after Thursday win

Woodward-Granger fell to BCLUW Thursday in their regional semifinal, ending their first season under head coach Bailey Hunt with a 23-11 record.

HUXLEY — The Woodward-Granger volleyball team finished with a 2-2 mark Saturday at the Ballard Classic, two days after sweeping visiting Pleasantville in WCAC action.

Thursday’s win over the Trojans came on scores of 25-9, 25-20 and 25-9 to lift the Hawks to 4-1 in league play. W-G is 12-9 after splitting their four matches Saturday.

Anna Tague had nine kills and Emma Drake eight against Pleasantville. Alissa Smeltzer provided six kills and Katelyn Scharlau four, with both Elly Polich and Natalie Weaver having three kills apiece. Polich handed out 18 assists, Drake 11 and Ashlyn Soelberg two.

Soelberg had 14 digs, Drake seven and Katelyn Bandstra five. Polich and Tague tallied four digs apiece, with Smeltzer and Weaver having one each while Drake and Scharlau each had a block.

W-G was brutally efficient behind the line, serving 70-of-74 (.946 percent) with 16 aces.

Drake was 18-of-18 with five aces and Tague 15-of-15 with four aces. Scharlau was 12-13-3, Bandstra 8-10-3 and Polich 8-9-1, with Soelberg 7-of-7 and Weaver 2-of-2.

W-G defeated Ballard, 21-10 and 21-11, and also topped South Tama, 21-14 and 21-14, Saturday. The Hawks fell, 21-19 and 21-19 to Johnston, with Pella topping W-G 21-17 and 21-15.

Tague finished with 14 combined kills, with Polich and Smeltzer making eight kills apiece, with Drake adding seven kills, Weaver five and Scharlau three. Drake had a block and 17 assists, with Polich totaling 21 assists while Soelberg, Tague and Weaver had one assist each.

Soelberg led the team with 25 digs, with Tague tallying 11, Drake nine and Bandstra eight. Polich and Scharlau had seven digs apiece and Weaver one.

Tague served 17-17-2 and Soelberg 16-16-2, with Drake 19-20-3 and Scharlau 16-17-2. Polich finished 11-14-2 behind the line, Bandstra 7-of-8 and Weaver 6-of-6 with Mae Anderson 5-5-1.

Statistics from Saturday do not include results from the South Tama match, which were not available.

W-G is at Earlham tonight and will return to action September 25 when they host Ogden.
