WOODWARD — The boys basketball team from Woodward-Granger opened their season Thursday with a 59-41 win over visiting Martensdale-St. Marys after the Hawk girls had suffered a 46-40 setback.

The nightcap was a tight affair, with the teams deadlocked at 25-all at the intermission. All of that changed in the third quarter, as W-G suddenly erupted for a 20-1 eight-minute run that opened a 19-point gulf and ensured victory.

W-G sank 6-of-13 3-pointers and make 11-of-14 free throws while M-SM hit just 2-of-15 beyond the arc while making 9-of-15 at the foul line.

Bryce Achenbach led the hosts with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals. Pacey Moats added 12 points and Nick Buch 10 points and three steals.

Keith Braunschweig provided seven points, Alex Bice six, Reese Jamison five, Trevor Simmons three, Kaya Bowlsby two and Jack Grell one. Bice also had three steals.

M-SM was led by 15 points from Trey Baker.

The girls game saw the guests open a 14-10 lead after one frame, and advantage they widened to 26-19 at the half. An 11-9 third quarter helped keep the Hawks at bay as the visitors held on for the non-conference win.

Emma Anderson led all scorers with 21 points for the Hawks. Finley Fitzgerald had six points, as did Katelyn Scharlau, with Mae Anderson scoring four points and Darby Nixon three.

Jevan Archibald had 17 points to pace the Blue Devils, who sank 12-of-15 free throws to spark the win.
