COLFAX — The Woodward-Granger defense held host Colfax-Mingo to just 35 yards on 24 rushes while limiting the Tigerhawk passing attack to only 103 yards as the Hawks posted a 30-0 win Friday.

The season-ending contest left both teams with overall records of 5-4, with both also finishing 2-3 in Class 1A District 7 action.

W-G was clearly the more physical of the teams, as 363 rushing yards on 63 carries prove. The Hawks attempted only seven passes, completing five for 50 yards.

Gabe Yingst started the scoring by stepping into the end zone from five yards away. A Matt Hansen PAT kick put the score at 7-0 after one quarter of play.

Reese Jamison scored on a seven-yard pass from Keith Braunschweig in the second quarter. Hansen’s PAT helped establish a 14-0 W-G lead at the intermission.

Hansen put the Hawks ahead by three scores when he drilled a 39-yard field goal. His boot was the longest successful field goal by a W-G place kicker since then-sophomore Jacob Musser hit a 39-yarder (and a 36-yard kick) in a 22-6 first round playoff win against Des Moines Christian Oct. 28, 2009. W-G would reach the quarterfinals that season.

Yingst busted tackles on an eight-yard TD blast later in the frame as the guests entered the final period with a 24-0 lead. Tate Lettow capped the scoring by racing 22 yards for a score in the fourth quarter, creating the 30-0 final.

Braunschweig was 4-6-1 for 49 yards and a TD, with Trevor Simmons attempting one pass, connecting with Jared Manning for one yard. Jamison had the seven-yard TD flip from Braunschweig, with Bryce Achenbach pulling in two passes for 12 yards while Joe Rhodes caught one aerial for 30 yards.

Lettow chewed up 171 yards on 33 carries while scoring once, with Yingst scoring twice while rushing 16 times for 129 yards. Braunschweig (4-28), Jamison (3-20), Kade Polich (2-6), Achenbach (1-5), Dylan Bird (3-3) and Dustin Harney (1-1) also carried the pigskin for the visitors.

Jamison (1-22), Pacey Moats (1-20) and Cale Pritchett (1-5) all had interceptions for the Hawks.

Yingst led the defense with six tackles, with Jamison and Jackson Newland making 5.5 stops and Lettow and Pritchett five apiece.
