Hawks turn back Wildcats to begin campaign

WOODWARD — The W-G volleyball season began Tuesday with a 3-0 sweep of visiting West Central Valley. AC/GC was also supposed to compete in a WCAC triangular, but the Charger netters are in a COVID-19 quarantine.

W-G was 25-22 and 25-18 winners over WCV in the first two sets, but then had to fight off a resolute Wildcats unit to prevail, 31-29, in the third match and secure the sweep.

Elly Polich had 15 kills, 17 assists, 14 digs and two blocks, with Natalie Weaver having 11 kills, 17 digs, two assists and a block while Audrey Simmons had 19 assists, 14 digs and six kills.

Gena Tague tallied five kills, four digs and an assist and Brayton Ashman four kills, two assists and two block. Grace Deputy made four blocks and a kill, Faith Keuhl six digs, Emily Trewet two digs and Darby Nixon two assists and two digs.

Polich served 16-of-18 with two aces and Simmons 10-10-1 while Ashman was 11-13-1. Nixon was 11-14-1 behind the line, with Keuhl 7-of-7 and Trewet 7-of-9.

W-G will compete in the Skip Anderson tourney in Bondurant Saturday. The Hawks will open in pool play with Des Moines East, Ames and Holy Trinity. Teams will then be reassigned for a final three games in adjusted pools.
