The National Weather Service offices in Des Moines have issued a heat advisory in effect until 7 p.m. Sunday for the Perry area.
Oppressive heat is forecast from Friday into the weekend. High temperatures look to rise well into the 90s, with heat index values ranging from 100 to 105 during the afternoon hours.
The overnight lows are forecast to remain in the 70s, providing little relief from the heat.
In addition to the hot and humid conditions, south winds of 15 to 25 mph, with gusts of 30 mph and higher, are forecast for Friday and Saturday afternoons. The stronger winds lead to an increased risk of dehydration.
A cold front is anticipated to drop through the state through the day Monday, but some locations in Iowa will remain hot for the better part of the day until the front moves south.
Remember to drink plenty of water, take breaks in the shade if you work or have sports activities outside and wear lightweight clothing.
To minimize the risk of heat-induced illness, drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned
room, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Do not wait until you are thirsty to drink. Avoid drinking alcoholic and caffeinated beverages as they cause dehydration.
Never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car, even for a minute. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, so call 9 1 1.
