Hot-serving Hawks sweep Cardinals in WCAC volleyball

EARLHAM — Sizzling serving from visiting Woodward-Granger allowed the Hawks to sweep Earlham, 3-0, in WCAC net play September 18. The Hawks improved their record to 13-9 overall and 5-1 in conference play with game wins of 25-19, 25-12 and 25-21.

W-G finished a combined 72-of-73 from behind the line, with nine ace serves. The team is currently fifth-best in Class 2A in serve percentage overall at 94 percent.

Emma Drake had the ignominy of having the only missed serve in the match for the guests, but finished 19-of-20 with two aces anyway. Ashlyn Soelberg was 16-16-4 and Elly Polich 9-9-3, with Anna Tague 20-of-20, Katelyn Bandstra 5-of-5 and Katelyn Scharlau 3-of-3.

Tague and Scharlau led the attack with seven kills apiece for W-G, with Natalie Weaver making four kills and Drake, Polich and Alissa Smeltzer two apiece. Drake provided 12 assists and Polich eight, with Bandstra, Soelberg, Weaver and Lisa Pitman each recording a single assist.

Soelberg led the defense with 16 digs, with Tague making 10, Drake nine and Smeltzer six. Polich recorded four digs and Scharlau three, with Bandstra adding two and Weaver one. Smeltzer had 1.5 blocks, Weaver one and Scharlau an assisted block.

W-G returns to action Tuesday when they host Ogden.
