The long-duration heat event is expected to last until Wednesday night, with hot temperatures and relatively high humidity levels across the Perry area, according to the National Weather Service, which issued an excessive heat warning.

The extended period of dangerously hot conditions, with heat index values up to 114, is affecting the southern half of Iowa, and the warning will remain in effect untilĀ  9 p.m. Wednesday, the NWS said Sunday.

Extreme heat and humidity for a long duration is particularly hard on the very young, the elderly and those with medical conditions, the NWS said. The potential for heat related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities, also rises significantly.

Those at risk should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and stay out of the sun. Check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible rescheduleĀ  strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible.

In order to reduce risk during outdoor work, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
