Iris Coffin, secretary of the Humane Society of Perry, issued a statement Wednesday, thanking the society’s longtime supporters and volunteers. The society ceased operations in July 2018, and Coffin’s statement coincided with the final wrapping up of year-end details.

Coffin’s statement follows:

The Humane Society of Perry is now officially closed. We would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone who has supported us over the years. We were able to help and adopt at least 150+ dogs and cats every year we were in existence, along with providing rabies clinics, safety clinics, Santa Paws at Christmas and many other services. Our remaining donation funds have been given to the following entities:

City of Perry Animal Shelter
Animal Resources Foundation
Furry Friends
Marta’s Legacy
Ames Animal Shelter
Animal Rescue League
Heinz 57 Rescue
Iowa Animal Partnership
Perry Food Pantry (for animal food)
Perry Animal Clinic (Emergency Fund)

Thank You,
Humane Society of Perry

For many years, volunteers with the Humane Society of Perry regularly maintained the Perry Animal Holding Facility, located near the Perry Water Pollution Control Facility, cleaning the kennels and feeding, watering and exercising the dogs caught running at large by officers of the Perry Police Department.

The society also managed adoptions for those animals never reclaimed by their owners.  Society volunteers performed similar duties at the Cattery, state-certified in 2015 as a 25-head-maximum cat shelter in downtown Perry.

The Raccoon River Pet Rescue, a privately owned animal shelter, is scheduled for construction east of the Perry Water Pollution Control Facility along the south side of Iowa Highway 141.
