In an effort to protect its customers and employees from COVID-19, Hy-Vee will give a free face mask to everyone entering its stores starting Monday, July 27, but no one will be required to wear it.

The company calls precautionary campaign., “Mask It Up To Shut COVID Down. It’s Your Choice.” The initiative will see the West Des Moines company hand out more than 3 million free masks in an effort to help support the CDC’s recommendation to wear masks in public.

Employees will be stationed at the front doors of all stores, handing out face masks to customers who are not wearing them prior to entering. Visitors will also see signage, employee attire and other reminders around the store about the anti-virus campaign.

Hy-Vee has required its employees to wear masks since early in the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the company, which was recently named one of the top three supermarkets in America for its handling of the COVID-19 crisis.

A number of major U.S. retailers already require customers at all stores to wear masks, including Apple, Best Buy, Costco, Starbucks, CVS, Kohl’s, Lowe’s, Market Basket, Sam’s Club, Shaw’s, Home Depot, Aldi, Target and Walmart.

  1. The fireworks within city limits need to end. It was horrible this year. Many of us suffered, and our pets did, too. Animals can suffer heart attacks due to fireworks. This is why I give my son’s dog calming aid treats to help him relax. Pretty bad when he is so scared to even go outside to potty! This needs NOT to be all about money but safety and health!

  2. Hy-Vee could not even police their own employees when face masks were required to be worn by the company. When we were told that all employees would be wearing a face mask, there still were numerous times that I was in an area Hy-Vee store, and I would see employees working without one on. Also, as far as their one-way aisles, the employees can’t even follow them. And the employees tend to create “traffic jams” in the aisles when they are pulling orders for those people that shop on line.
