ADEL, Iowa — More than 100 people gathered at the Dallas County Courthouse Friday night for a candlelight vigil for ADM freshman Caelen Peterson, who took his own life early Wednesday.

Among the speakers at the hour-long memorial was Peterson’s father, Dale Peterson of Adel, who led the crowd to exclaim in unison, “I will not give up!”

Peterson said his son was a victim of bullying at ADM High School, and he offered comfort and defense to any other children suffering from bullying.

Law enforcement is investigating Peterson’s death, which occurred about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The ADM High School and ADM School Board have not issued a statement about the tragedy. The school board’s next regular meeting is Monday, Feb. 13 at 6 p.m. at 215 N. 11th St. in Adel.

A second vigil for Caelen Peterson will be held Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in at Evens Park on S. 12th Street in Adel.
