A Jefferson pair was arrested in rural Calhoun County about 1 p.m. Wednesday after a busy day that included allegedly stealing a truck in Jefferson in the morning and a car in Rockwell City at noon.
Edward Goff, 39, and Samantha Cline-Hoskins, 28, were taken into custody by Calhoun County Sheriff’s Deputies after seeking to elude law enforcement in a stolen Cadillac CST.
According to Jefferson Police Department Captain Heath Enns, a deputy with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s office contacted the Jefferson department about 8:15 a.m. Wednesday after finding a 2012 Dodge Ram truck in a ditch about 4:45 a.m. about five miles west of Knoke at the intersection of 190th Street and Dakota Avenue in Calhoun County.
The vehicle, found in the ditch about 4:45 a.m., was occupied by Goff and Cline-Hoskins. The Calhoun County Deputy determined the vehicle was a company truck belonging to Renew Energy Maintenance of Jefferson, a wind turbine company. Goff and Cline-Hoskins told the deputy they were on their way to Des Moines when the vehicle left the roadway.
“The deputy attempted to contact staff at Renew Energy to confirm the two should be in the vehicle,” Enns said, “but he could not get an answer.” So the deputy dropped the pair off at the Sparky’s gas station in Rockwell City.
When Renew Energy Maintenance opened for business later that morning, they realized one of their fleet vehicles was missing and reported it to law enforcement, Enns said.
Shortly after, a black Cadillac CTS was reported stolen from the Sparky’s gas station in Rockwell City. A deputy with the Pocahontas Sheriff’s office located the Cadillac in their county about 12:30 p.m.
“The deputy attempted to stop the vehicle,” Enns said, “but the vehicle continued and a pursuit ensued.” The pursuit ended one mile west of Pomeroy when Goff lost control of the vehicle.
Agencies involved in the pursuit included the Calhoun County Sheriff’s office, Pocahontas Sheriff’s office, Pocahontas Police Department, Fonda Police Department, Pomeroy Police Department, Iowa State Patrol and Iowa Department of Transportation.
Enns said his department was contacted later in the day Wednesday by Vickie Williams of Jefferson, who said Goff and Cline-Hoskins had been staying with her at 702 W. Maholon St. in Jefferson. Williams reported a number of items missing from her house: a Sony Blu-Ray/DVD player, Nintendo Wii, HP Smart C7200 printer, a red suitcase, an SD Card, electrical wiring and a Rockford Fosgate Amplifier.
A Calhoun County Sheriff’s Deputy confirmed that items matching the description given by Williams were found in the bed of the stolen and wrecked Renew Energy vehicle.
According to a spokesperson from the Sac County Sheriff’s office, Goff is currently being held on $2,000 bond in the Sac County Jail in Sac City on charges of eluding and operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent. Cline-Hoskins was also charged with operating a vehicle without the owner’s consent and released with promise to appear for trial.
Goff and Cline-Hoskins also face additional charges from the Jefferson Police Department and the Pocahontas Police Department.
