WOODWARD — The Woodward Academy cagers finished the first quarter of Tuesday’s game with crosstown rival Woodward-Granger with a six-point lead. For the following 24 minutes to contest remained in doubt, but the early margin proved enough cushion as the Knights completed a season-sweep of the Hawks in West Central Conference play with a 65-62 win.

The Knights (6-5, 6-5) ran out to a 19-13 lead after one period before entering the locker room with a 34-30 edge at the intermission. The four-point lead stood pat after a further eight minutes, with the Academy holding on to a 49-45 advantage with one period left to play.

The Hawks (5-8, 3-8) shot well, sinking 27-of-60 field goals, but went to the foul line only six times, making good on three of those attempts, as the Knights slipped away with the victory.

Marcus McConahay had 19 points, Bodie Harrison 10 and Bryce Achenbach eight to lead W-G. Cameron Hoyt and Spencer Hanson scored six points apiece, with Reese Jamison, J.P. Nixon and Brady Aunspach each adding four points while a Matt Buch free throw capped the scoring list for the Hawks.

McConahay finished with seven rebounds and five assists and Jamison with five boards and four steals while Hanson pulled cleared five caroms. Achenbach had four rebounds, five assists and two steals, with Harrison contributing three steals.

W-G returns to action with a trip to Van Meter Friday before returning home Tuesday for a visit from Ogden.
