To the editor:

When I was growing up in the ’60s on my family’s farm, the township hall was the old school building across the road from my house. It was the location for voting, and my dad was responsible for opening and closing. It was a quiet hum of activity. (I suppose I’m getting old, but I remember those late fall days of harvest and township community with such fondness.)

Voting is more consolidated now, and most rural folks need to travel to town to vote. So many activities are occurring, and people travel more easily and frequently.

For people who aren’t sure where they will be on Tuesday, Nov. 5, what activity their kids will need to be at, what shift they will work or what the weather will be like, this is a reminder you can vote in person on Friday, Oct. 18 from 12-6 p.m. at the McCreary Community Building at 1800 Pattee St. in Perry.

Just show up with your ID, and the workers will tell you what to do. There are other satellite voting locations in Dallas County. They are listed in ThePerryNews.com and can be found at the county auditor’s website.

If you have an absentee ballot but would like to take advantage of this opportunity, please take that ballot with you to the satellite location. It is important to remember that a new Iowa law mandates that your ballot be in the auditor’s office by closing time on voting day, Tuesday, Nov. 5, no matter when you mail it. (With mail being slow, there are no guarantees your ballot will arrive in time.)

Regardless of when or where you vote, please vote. We are fortunate to live in a country where our voices can be heard. A well-informed, voting citizenry is vital in maintaining it.
