Many Christians justified slavery by means of scripture and claims about the providential will of God, and people who supported abolition were called, in the words of James H. Thornwell, “atheists, socialists, communists (and) red republicans.”

The Perry Public Library has announced the cancelation of the presidential-themed lecture Wednesday, Feb. 22 by amateur presidential historian Rex Voegtlin of Earlham.

Voegtlin was scheduled to deliver a talk called “Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln: Their Views Regarding Providence and Slavery” in the Community Room of the Perry Public Library at 6 p.m.

Voegtlin is a retired financial planner with a passion for Revolutionary War history and the history of the U.S. presidents. He has a master’s degree from Iowa State University and is married to the Grammy-nominated Christian vocalist Karen Voegtlin.

The lecture will discuss the ways Christians in the U.S. rationalized slavery and the groundwork laid by Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln to end American slavery.
