Raising U.S. flags across Perry Saturday morning were volunteers, from left, Perry Lions John Andorf and Lou Hoger, Perry Optimist Dr. Randy McCaulley, and Perry Lions Bob Roeder and Don Strassburg.

Volunteers from the Perry Lions Club and Perry Optimist International Club honored the nation’s veterans Saturday by planting more than 250 U.S. flags in the Flags over Perry program.

Led by Korean War veteran Don Strassburg of Perry, the Perry Lions and Optimists fanned out about a dozen routes around Perry to raise the flags in the morning and returning to lower the flags in the evening.

For a fee of $25, Perry residents can have the Perry Lions and Perry Optimists plant an American Flag on their property on five federal holidays yearly. Interested residents can fill out an order form or contact Perry Lion Dave Wright at 515-240-7281.

Money raised from the flag project funds Optimist Club scholarships for Perry youth and Lions Club projects such as eyeglasses for the needy, seeing-eye dogs, summer camp for handicapped children and many other worthwhile activities.
