WOODWARD — Friday’s WCAC boys basketball tilt between Des Moines Christian and Woodward-Granger proved the cliche that “numbers don’t lie.”

DMC overcame being outscored by 14 points in the second quarter to best W-G by 14 points in the fourth frame. W-G had placed five more points on the board in than their guests in the third period, but it proved, in the end, that a 21-10 DMC advantage in the first eight minutes would provide the final margin as the Lions posted a 65-59 victory.

The Lions (12-1, 9-1) had barely escaped the Hawks (8-5, 6-5) Dec. 1 with a 71-65 win in Urbandale before slipping off with their second six-point win in the season series Friday.

W-G had surged from a 21-10 deficit to grab a 33-30 lead at the half, then extended their advantage to 46-38 entering the fourth quarter.

At that point DMC took control, surging back to tie the game with three minutes to play before pulling out the victory.

Isaac Prewitt had 21 points, Brady Hewitt 17, Jake Waring 13 and Seth Juhl 10 for the Lions, with Trey Johnson and Curran Ingram adding two points apiece.

Keith Braunschweig had 13 points and seven rebounds and Bryce Achenbach 13 points and four assists for W-G. Kaya Bowlsby added 10 points and Noah Hoyt nine, with six points apiece from J.P. Nixon and Reese Jamison and two from Pacey Moats capped the Hawk scoring. Jamison had seven rebounds as well for the hosts.

W-G will play Woodward Academy Tuesday in the W-G Middle School gym. They will then rejoin the Hawk girls in hosting Van Meter Friday.
