The Friends of the Perry Public Library and Friends of the Minburn Public Library will host the family-friendly Ride to Read event on the Raccoon River Valley Bike Trail Sunday, Sept. 30 from 1-4 p.m.

The Ride to Read is a bike ride geared toward families with elementary school-aged children. The ride starts at either Forest Park Museum in Perry or the tennis courts in Minburn, with parking at Minburn school.

“Spin,” by Rebecca Janni, is the story of a young girl on a bike.

The ride will feature guest author Rebecca Janni of Johnston, who will read from her book “Spin” at the midway point along the trail. “Spin” is the story of a young girl on a bike.

Janni herself learned as a young girl that the best way to get around her neighborhood is on a bike and that reading is the best way to get around the world.

She is also the author of “Jammy Dance” and the “Every Cowgirl” series. Janni divides her time between teaching at Grand View University in Des Moines, visiting schools and libraries and volunteering and writing for children – all which take a backseat to motherhood.

Janni lives in Johnston with her much-loved husband, James, their four children, Andrew, Anna, Jacob and Joshua and the family dog, Mickey. She loves to read and bike with her family — but not at the same time.

Refreshments will be served at the Ride to Read midway reading.

The bike route between Perry and Minburn is six miles. Registration begins at 1 p.m. at both the Minburn tennis courts and at Forest Park Museum at 14561 K Ave. in Perry. Janni will be located three miles from each site. Individuals or families may bike only a few miles or the entire route.

The Ride to Read event is free and open to the public. In case of rain, the event will be held at the Forest Park Museum. For more information, call the Perry Public Library at 515-465-3569.
